Nokia Makes Mobile Internet Access Faster with New Nokia 2.0 Browser for Series 40 Devices

Leading mobile phone maker Nokia has today announced the availability of Nokia Browser 2.0, a major update dedicated to Nokia Series 40 devices. Nokia claims that the new version reduces data consumption by up to 90%, meaning that consumers can enjoy faster and cheaper internet access. Web sites load up to three times faster in comparison to devices without cloud-accelerated browsing and consumers will also benefit from a number of other enhanced capabilities.

From the first look, consumers are easily able to discover new web content and enjoy one-click access to top, local sites via the Nokia Browser’s inviting and intuitive start page. We have optimized the browser to enable users to easily stay connected with friends and family at the touch of a button as well as to share files and links across social networks. The new and improved Download Manager helps consumers to manage external content easily, saving music, video or pictures on a memory card, while surfing the internet.

The update supports all forms of Series 40: Touch, QWERTY and Non-Touch, including the Nokia Asha range, as well as popular devices such as the Nokia C3-00, Nokia C2-03 andNokia X3-02. The update will be pre-loaded on some current and all future Nokia Series 40 devices, while for existing users the update arrives as a free, optional over-the-air download. New users can download it from the Nokia Store. The browser is available in 87 languages in over 200 countries and territories.

Nokia Browser 2.0 makes use of cloud-based servers which adapt standard web pages so that they perform better on Nokia Series 40 devices. Since web pages are compressed and cached in the cloud, end users can access web sites in a manner which is faster and requires significantly less data to be sent over their mobile network. For pay-per-use contracts this will result in more cost-effective browsing, while users on an operator data plan will be able to do more web surfing without exceeding their monthly usage limits.

India Adds 6.87 Million GSM Subscribers in March 2012 – Airtel Leads

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) today released India’s ‘GSM Subscriber Figures for March 2012.

Bharti Airtel tops in the new subscriber additions, added a total of 2.5 million new GSM subscribers followed by IDEA Cellular added the 2nd largest number of subscribers with 2.01 million in March. Bharti Airtel now has more than 181 million GSM customers with a 27.22% market share.

According to the data released by COAI total 6.87 million new GSM subscribers added with 1.04% increase from previous month taking the all-India GSM cellular subscriber base to 664.08 million at the end of March 2012.

Videocon once again lost 0.25 million subscribers. The user base of Videocon stood at 5.95 million.AIRCEL also lost 0.68 million customers and its subscriber base was at 62.57 million.

Among the leading GSM Mobile Service Operators, Vodafone India added 1.02 million  new customers, boosting its subscriber base 150.46 million. Uninor that lost  licences in the SC’s 2G judgment, notched 1.29 million new customers. Its user base was at 42.43 million by March-end.

State run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) added 0.89 million  taking their subscriber base to 94.67 million. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) added 62399 new users during the month, boosting its total base to 5.93 million at the end of  March ’2011.

Other Operators such as STel, Etisalat DB (Cheers Mobile) and Loop Telecom (except Loop Mobile -Mumbai) have announced shutting down of mobile services as earlier we shared on TelecomTalk and are now helping their users move to other operators through Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

Please note : COAI GSM Subscriber base does not include the Reliance Communications (Rcom) and Tata Docomo’s GSM subscriber Base (same not submitted to COAI).

Blue Android Enters India As Rcom Partners Google – Offers 1 GB Free 3G Data Usage on Android Smartphones

Vodafone India today announced the launch of a unique service to assure ‘Seamless Relocation‘ for all its postpaid customers across all circles in India.

Tikona To Launch 4G – LTE Wireless Broadband Services Soon

Fourth generation (4G) Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum winner Tikona Digital Networks (TDN) geared up to launch Long Term Evolution (LTE -TDD) based High Speed 4G Wirelss Broadband service in Gujarat, Himachal Praesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh East and UP West beginning October 2012.

This follows Airtel’s launch of 4G Broadband services – the first of its kind in India which was launched in Kolkata as we shared on TelecomTalk.

According to Mr. Prakash Bjpai, CEO,Tikona Digital Networks (TDN) “There is lot of potential in teir 2 and tier 3 cities/towns and these markets are untaped. We will rolls out commercial 4G Wireless Broadband services initially from October 2012.”

In 2010 Tikona won BWA spectrum in 5 five key circles – Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh east and west covering 31% population of India for over Rs. 1,058 crore.

Reliance Infotel (RIL Group) in the only pan India spectrum winner for 4G / BWA service. Other winners are Bharti Airtel (4 circles) whcih has already launched India’s first 4G services in Kolkata, Aircel (8 circles), Tikona Wireless (5 circles), and Qualcomm (4 Circles) and MTNL (2 circles).
